Question 1

The largest ethnic minority group in Britain is Irish. At the 1991 census 245,000 people (0.45% of Britain's population) said they were born in Northern Ireland and 592,000 (1.8% of Britain's population) said they were born in the Irish Republic. If their children are included, researchers estimate that they form 4.6% of Britain's population and as much as 11.5% of the population of Greater London.

In 1787, London's black population was 20,000. Most came form slaves belonging to a ship captains and plantation owners. Others arrived as stowaways, escaping the brutalities of plantation life. A small number came after the American War of Independence because they had been promised freedom if they fought for Britain during the war.

Britain's oldest existing Mosque is the Shah Jehan Mosque in Woking. It was built to cater for the needs of students attending the nearby Oriental Institute at Maybury. It was designed by W.L. Chambers using Indian precedents and opened in 1889.

Mary Seacole came form a wealthy Asian family and she paid to attend nursing school. Then she self funded her nursing stations and field hospitals. In fact Many record show that she actually did more field work and nursing work than Florence Nightingale who was more administration based.
